Fillings

Many types of fillings are available today. The choice of materials is often difficult because each has their own advantage and each works best in certain situations.

Silver restorations have been the standard of care for many years. They are the least expensive and very long lasting but their color is a disadvantage. This is a great material for posterior teeth and especially large restorations when cost is a concern.

Composite restorations are tooth colored and have an obvious color advantage. They are more expensive and do not last like silver fillings. They are ideal nearer the front of the mouth and for smaller restorations.

Gold is the most precise and more expensive but it is also the strongest and the longest lasting in most situations but the color is its disadvantage. This is ideal for adults in the back of the mouth where strength and longevity are considerations.

Porcelain has some of the advantages of each of the other materials. It is strong, tooth colored, wears slowly, and can be used for larger restorations. It is ideal for adults that have medium to large restorations near the front of the mouth.

• Combinations of materials are used when one material does not meet all the needs of the situation.

Many people still have silver fillings in their mouths from years past. Many of these restorations are working well but they wish more cosmetic solutions as adults. We know that by unavoidable design, any fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Porcelain inlays and tooth-colored restorations of the top of the tooth (onlays) create fillings that are not only beautiful (or unnoticeable), but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are aesthetically pleasing and very strong thanks to new bonding technologies. The result is a beautiful smile!

Sealants

Highly effective in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of your posterior chewing teeth, sealants are a simple procedure in which a tooth-colored acrylic "coating" is painted onto the surface of the tooth. This effectively "seals" the deep grooves acting as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids.

Sealants protect the depressions and grooves of your teeth from food particles and plaque that brushing and flossing can't reach.

Easy to apply, sealants take only a few minutes to seal each tooth. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and can last several years before a reapplication is needed. Children and adults can benefit from sealants in the fight against tooth decay.
